Adding an RSS Feed

I added an RSS feed to my PHMS Reads blog by customizing the layout.  Blogger has a widget that you can add to your blog that allows people to subscribe.  It was very easy to add.

Week 5: RSS and Feed Readers

I use Google Reader.  It is part of my iGoogle page which is my home page.  So, I see it everytime I go to the internet.  That way I don't forget to look at it.  I follow 69 blogs.  Some are library, some education, some technology, and a few just for fun.  This is a big part of my PLN (Professional Learning Network).  It's how I keep up with what's new in the worlds of library, technology, and education.  My favorite blog is Free Technology for Teachers.  It's written by a social studies teacher, but he should have been a librarian.  He is always recommending great websites for teachers in all curriculum areas.  I just read an article that listed 10 blogs you shouldn't miss.  I added those to my reading list.  They were:

The publishers discussed upcoming Young Adult books. One thing I noticed was that very few of the books were for boys. Almost all of them had a female main character. I did get some good ideas for books to add to the collection if/when I get some money for the budget. I was interested in the Harlequin/Kimani Tru series. 11 of their titles were chosed for the YA Quick Picks lists. They won't be great literature, but will appeal to our reluctant readers. Most of my picks were from HarperCollins, which didn't surprise me, but I did learn about other publishers that are not mainstream, but have some good titles for YAs.

Week Two: Online Communities

I have had a Facebook page for quite some time. I added some friends from the library group and also tried some features on Facebook that I had not used. I also signed up for the Teacher Librarian Ning. I have subscribed to Classroom 2.0, but not really used it. I have quite a few students who have asked to be friends. I don't invite students, but do accept when they ask. I have sometimes posted messages about what I was reading. I could use that more to connect to students. I could also post information about upcoming events in the library.
